Cyclone Narelle Hits Queensland: Minor Damage Reported

Cyclone Narelle Strikes Far North Queensland with Severe Winds

Newly released footage from the Queensland Police Service has captured the aftermath of Tropical Cyclone Narelle as it swept through the far north region of Queensland. The video, recorded on Friday, shows the town of Coen dealing with the impacts of the storm, which has since weakened to a still-severe category 3 cyclone as it moves across the Cape York peninsula.

Police Assessment Reveals Limited Ground Impact

Superintendent Kevin Fitzgibbon provided an update on the situation, stating that in the grand scheme of things, the impact on the ground has been fairly minor. The primary issue reported has been power loss, with initial estimates indicating around 1,000 homes affected. However, Fitzgibbon praised the efforts of energy supplier Ergon, noting that they have been doing a good job in restoring services. As a result, the number of affected homes has been significantly reduced to approximately 100.

Despite the severe conditions, including winds reaching up to 250km/h that tore off roofs and felled trees, the overall damage has been contained. The police footage highlights the resilience of the community and the effectiveness of emergency response teams in mitigating more widespread destruction.

Ongoing Monitoring as Storm Continues to Weaken

Authorities continue to monitor Tropical Cyclone Narelle closely as it progresses across the Cape York peninsula. While the storm remains a threat, the current assessment suggests that the worst may be over for Coen and surrounding areas. Residents are advised to stay informed and follow safety guidelines as cleanup and recovery efforts proceed.

This incident underscores the importance of preparedness and rapid response in the face of extreme weather events in Queensland.
