The Northern Storm Football Club in Coffs Harbour, New South Wales, is mourning the sudden death of Mitchell Weeden, a 38-year-old player and vice president who passed away on May 20. The club described him as a beloved teammate, father, husband, and tireless volunteer who contributed in countless roles, including grounds person, equipment coordinator, goalkeeping coach, referee, and Under 6s coordinator.
Club and Community in Shock
In a heartfelt Facebook post, the club expressed deep sadness, stating that Weeden's loss leaves an enormous void. He is survived by his wife Liana and their two young sons, aged four and two. The club postponed its Premier League and first division matches last weekend, and other teams observed a minute's silence in his honor.
Outpouring of Tributes
A GoFundMe campaign has raised over $21,000 to support Weeden's family. Friends and fellow players paid tribute, with Craig Caruana writing, 'We are all worse off for the person we lost, but we are better people for the person we knew.' Another commenter called him 'one of the nicest blokes both on and off the pitch.'
Liana Weeden posted a wedding photo on Facebook with the caption 'Always & forever,' drawing messages of support. Weeden also served as president of the Coffs Colts Cricket Club, which praised his tireless efforts in coaching juniors and mentoring cricketers.
Other local clubs, including Bellingen, Urunga, Boambee, and Kempsey Saints, also paid their respects online.
