The picturesque town of Faversham in Kent has claimed the title for the UK's hottest day of the year, with temperatures peaking at a sweltering 32.2°C. The Met Office confirmed the record-breaking heat on Sunday, as much of England basked in glorious sunshine.
Heatwave Hits New Highs
This scorching milestone surpasses the previous 2024 record of 30.3°C set just days earlier in Chertsey, Surrey. The mercury continued to climb across southern England over the weekend, with London and the Home Counties experiencing particularly intense heat.
Scotland Braces for Stormy Weather
While southerners enjoyed the sunshine, the Met Office issued yellow weather warnings for thunderstorms across Scotland. Forecasters predict heavy downpours could bring up to 40mm of rain in just a few hours, potentially causing travel disruption and flash flooding in affected areas.
Health Warnings in Place
Public health officials have urged vulnerable groups to take precautions during the heatwave. The UK Health Security Agency has activated its heat-health alert system, advising people to:
- Stay hydrated throughout the day
- Avoid the sun during peak hours (11am-3pm)
- Check on elderly neighbours and relatives
- Never leave children or pets in parked vehicles
The Met Office predicts the warm weather will continue into the coming week, though temperatures may gradually decrease from midweek onwards.
