Australian Mother's Horror Find: Spider Nest in Freshly Washed Underwear
Australian Mother Finds Spider Nest in Freshly Washed Underwear

An Australian mother has recounted a terrifying experience after discovering a spider's nest concealed within her freshly washed underwear. Emily Newton, from Brisbane, was preparing to take a walk with her daughter last week when she changed into clothes she had taken off the washing line the day before.

The Unsettling Discovery

Ms Newton described feeling a peculiar sensation and decided to inspect her underwear when she visited the toilet. Initially, she mistook the unusual spot for bird droppings. "I looked at the crotch part of my underwear and was like, 'No way, it has bird poo on it' because it looked like it had a shiny cover on it," she explained. "I yelled out to my husband and was like, 'Oh my god, there's bird poo on the crotch part of my underwear. Am I going to get a disease or something?'"

A Moving Nightmare

Upon closer examination, the spot began to move, revealing a horrifying truth. "It turned out to be a spider and it was in a pouch full of eggs," Ms Newton said. "It was all wriggling and moving around, and the spider's legs started coming out. That was the movement I felt down there when I thought maybe I needed to go to the toilet." She detailed the nest as a "flat white mesh with a strange yellow colour off to the side of it," with brown spider legs visible among the eggs.

Immediate Reaction and Aftermath

The discovery prompted an immediate and dramatic response. Ms Newton screamed, leaped off the toilet, and flung her underwear down the hallway before "sprinting into the shower and washing every single opening in my body." Her husband eventually disposed of the underwear and the spider by flicking them into the garden and discarding the garment in the bin.

A Warning to Others

Reflecting on the ordeal, Ms Newton issued a stern warning to everyone who takes their laundry off outdoor lines. "If you're bringing your washing in off the line, check it," she advised. She noted that she had taken all her washing off the line the day before and packed it away, but admitted, "I always shake everything out, but I just didn't check this one tiny little patch."

Not an Isolated Incident

This was not a rare occurrence, as many Australians shared similar experiences after Ms Newton posted about her ordeal on TikTok. One person commented, "The same thing happened to me the other day, but I just saw it before I pulled up my underwear. I had the same thought process too and thought it was bird poo. I wish it was bird poo." Another added, "Honestly, the amount of times I've brought in washing and sheets from the line and they have spiders in them, I started using my dryer a lot more." A third recounted, "It happened to me but it was with a cloth nappy liner. I was about to put it on my daughter and thought, 'Oh, what's that dark circle'. I turned it over and was a spider with babies attached."

The incident highlights the potential hazards of outdoor laundry drying in Australia, where spiders and other insects can easily find their way into clothing. Experts recommend thoroughly shaking out and inspecting all items before wearing them, especially in warmer months when spider activity increases. This story serves as a cautionary tale for households across the country, emphasizing the importance of vigilance in everyday routines to avoid such unsettling surprises.
