The bank holiday weekend is set to bring a mix of sunshine and showers across the UK, according to the Met Office. After recent warm weather, temperatures will drop to near-average levels, with some regions experiencing heavy rain and thunder.
Saturday's Forecast
Meteorologist Greg Dewhurst explained that Saturday will start with some warm sunny spells, but there is an increasing risk of heavy downpours moving up from the south, particularly in the afternoon and evening. The best of the sunshine will see highs of around 22-23C in London, but elsewhere temperatures will fall to 15-16C in the south and 10-15C in the north.
The sunniest areas will be around central London, the Midlands, northern England, and East Anglia, while other parts will cloud over. Rain, heavy and potentially thundery, is expected through central and southern England and south Wales. Dewhurst warned that rumbles of thunder and heavy downpours could lead to tricky travel conditions later on Saturday.
Sunday and Monday Outlook
On Sunday, the weather will remain unsettled with a mix of sunshine and showers. The most likely areas for showers are south Wales, parts of Devon and Cornwall, and stretching across to London and south-east England. Dewhurst noted that the nature of showers means some areas could see rain while nearby places remain dry and sunny.
Met Office deputy chief forecaster Mark Sidaway said that bank holiday Monday will remain changeable, with lingering cloud and scattered showers across southern and central areas. However, these showers should be lighter and fewer than over the weekend. Temperatures will continue to be around average for the time of year, with highs of 15-16C in the south and 10-15C in the north.
Overall, the bank holiday weekend will be a hit-and-miss affair for outdoor plans, with a mixture of rain and sunshine for many. Those hoping for a barbecue may need to keep an eye on the radar and be prepared for sudden changes.
