New weather maps show temperatures could plunge to -4C in parts of the UK within days, with Scotland bearing the brunt of the cold snap. The data, by WXCharts, indicates that up to ten counties in northern Scotland could see temperatures between -1C and -2C by Friday, November 6, while the rest of the country remains in the single digits.
Scotland set for the chilliest conditions
Areas in the north, Midlands and south could see lows of between 6C and 8C, while much of Wales is forecast for lows of 5C. Freezing conditions look set to intensify the following day, with -4C possible in the north-easternmost tip of Aberdeenshire by midday on November 7, according to WXCharts.
The cold snap comes as the UK recovers from two storms that killed three people and left more than 160,000 without power. Storms Austen and Boelo struck within hours of each other on the weekend of October 23–25, causing widespread travel disruption, flooding, power cuts and event cancellations as wind gusts topped 80mph.
Storm victims named
James Abiwon, 29, was named as the man killed during Storm Boelo when a tree crashed onto his car in north London. Royal gardener Richard Baines, 60, was also confirmed to have been killed during the storm when he was struck by a tree in Scotland. Mum Sal Galloway, 59, died after being swept out to sea while walking her dog on an Isle of Wight seafront on Monday.
The Met Office has warned of "chilly" conditions accompanied by fog and rain at the start of November. In its long-range outlook for November 1 to November 10, the forecaster said: "Pressure is set to build in the vicinity of the UK as we move into early November, with a lot of dry weather as a result."
Counties set for sub-zero temperatures from November 6
The forecaster added: "Cloud amounts will be quite variable with weak fronts bringing a focus of cloud, and possibly light rain at times, but there is no significant bias to where these are favoured. Within the high pressure, some places, perhaps more likely towards the east, will likely see overnight and morning fog, which at this time of year could take a while to clear and where it lingers, it will remain chilly."
The ten counties expected to see sub-zero temperatures are Perthshire, Angus, Aberdeenshire, Banffshire, Morayshire, Nairnshire, Ross-shire and Cromartyshire, Sutherland, Caithness, and Kincardineshire.
