The horror film Hokum, which has been described as 'deeply disturbing' and 'ghastly', is now streaming on Prime Video in the UK. The movie, which had a limited cinema release earlier this year, has earned $25 million at the box office against a modest $5 million budget.
Cast and Plot
Severance and The Whisper Man star Adam Scott leads the cast as novelist Ohm Bauman. The story follows Bauman as he goes on a retreat to a remote inn to scatter his parents' ashes. He becomes consumed by tales of a witch that haunts the honeymoon suite, and soon disturbing visions and a shocking disappearance force him to confront dark corners of his past.
Critical Reception
Despite being a lesser-known release, Hokum boasts an impressive 90% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. One critic called it "a hauntingly unpredictable nightmare." Another review added: "It is the kind of horror film that sneaks up on you—not with cheap jolts or overused genre tricks, but with a slow, creeping sense of dread that tightens its grip scene by scene."
A further reviewer praised director Damien McCarthy, writing: "A masterclass in atmosphere, restraint, and the art of making simple things profoundly unsettling. Damien McCarthy continues to prove he's one of the strongest voices working in horror, and I can't wait to see what nightmare he dreams up next."
Fan Reactions
Fans have been equally impressed. One viewer shared online: "This is easily the best horror movie of 2026 so far - and maybe one of the greatest horror films ever made. Hokum delivers a deeply disturbing mix of ghost story, mystery, and crime thriller that kept me completely on edge the entire time. There were moments when I literally had to cover my eyes, but I was still peeking through my fingers because I couldn't look away. This movie genuinely scared the hell out of me."
Another person commented: "Adam Scott was fantastic, and the entire cast did an amazing job bringing the story to life. I had an absolute blast watching this film. If you love creepy ghost stories and intense horror, you need to see this movie."
A viewer also posted: "This is one of the best horror movies I have seen in years. It felt unique, and often subverted my expectations. Constantly felt tense, whether it was from what was on the screen or the sounds used to build dread. If you enjoy horror movies, avoid trailers, and go in blind, and you will not be disappointed."
