Met Office Forecasts Hottest Day of 2026 as Sahara Heatwave Hits UK
Sahara Heat Blast to Bring Hottest Day of Year on Thursday

The Met Office has issued a significant weather forecast indicating that Thursday could become the hottest day of the year across the United Kingdom. Meteorologists attribute this anticipated temperature surge to a substantial blast of heat originating from the Sahara Desert, which is expected to elevate mercury levels well above seasonal averages.

Sahara Heat Drives Unseasonable Warmth

In a detailed ten-day forecast shared on social media platform X, Met Office meteorologist Alex Deakin explained that a southerly wind pattern will draw both dust and significantly warmer air northwards from the Sahara region. This atmospheric shift is set to create unusually high temperatures for early March, challenging previous seasonal records.

Projected Temperature Peaks Across UK Cities

Detailed meteorological maps reveal substantial temperature increases across multiple urban centres. London is forecast to reach approximately 18 degrees Celsius, while Manchester could see 17C. Cardiff may experience temperatures around 16C, with Newcastle potentially hitting 15C. Although Northern Ireland and Scotland are expected to remain cooler, Edinburgh could still reach a notable 14C.

Alex Deakin emphasised that localized areas, particularly in eastern England, might experience even higher peaks. "That warmer air wafting its way in will allow temperatures to probably peak Thursday across eastern England, getting up to 18C, maybe 19C in a few places," Deakin stated. This would surpass the current yearly high of 18.7C recorded last week at Kew Gardens.

Comparative International Temperatures

The forecasted UK temperatures notably exceed those expected in several Mediterranean destinations. Barcelona is projected to reach only 14C on Thursday, while Athens and Zante are both forecast for 17C. This places parts of the United Kingdom potentially warmer than these traditional warm-weather locations.

Weather Patterns and Regional Variations

Met Office meteorologist Honor Criswick provided additional context regarding Thursday's weather patterns. "We have got a band of cloud and rain, this could be heavy at times, in western areas, it's going to move its way eastwards. To the east of that, it should be mostly fine. There should be lots of long sunny periods until that rain starts pushing into the east," Criswick explained.

The BBC Weather forecast aligns with this outlook, predicting cloud and rain for western Scotland and Northern Ireland initially, spreading to eastern Scotland, Wales, and parts of western England by evening. Other regions are expected to remain mostly dry with significant sunshine.

Extended Weekend Forecast

Looking beyond Thursday, weather conditions show gradual changes. Friday is expected to bring mostly cloudy but generally dry conditions across England and Wales, while Scotland and Northern Ireland may enjoy considerable sunshine. Saturday should remain dry for most areas though increasingly cloudy, with the best brightness likely in northern regions. Sunday introduces variable cloud cover with potential for scattered showers in southwestern areas.

Temperature anomaly maps clearly illustrate areas where readings will rise substantially above seasonal norms. Regions depicted in deep red—primarily across England, Wales, southern Scotland, and eastern Scotland—highlight where the most significant temperature deviations are anticipated throughout Thursday afternoon.
