Weather maps indicate that the North East will experience a rise in temperatures over the coming days, following a period of wet and windy conditions. The mercury is forecast to climb into the twenties later this week, but not before additional heavy showers.
Temperature Forecast
According to Met Office maps, temperatures in the region will steadily increase from highs of 17°C this weekend to 23°C by Friday, June 19. While this marks an improvement on June's weather so far, it will not be as warm as the heatwave at the end of May, which broke records in England and Wales with a scorching high of 35.1°C recorded at Kew Gardens.
Newcastle Specifics
In Newcastle, highs of 15°C are expected on Monday, June 15, rising to 18°C on Tuesday and Wednesday, then 21°C on Thursday, and finally peaking at 22°C on Friday. However, the rising temperatures will not be accompanied by continuous sunshine, with heavy outbreaks of rain predicted throughout the first half of the week.
Weekend Outlook
Before the mid-week rain, this weekend will bring dry and bright conditions as showers seen on Saturday morning become more isolated. Strong winds are making it feel cooler than recent days, with highs of 17°C in Newcastle feeling more like 12°C on Saturday, June 13. These winds are expected to ease by Sunday.
The Met Office forecast for June 14 states: "Generally fine and dry, with light winds and bright spells, though often rather cloudy. Some sunny spells may develop through the afternoon, especially in the east. Turning slightly warmer. Maximum temperature 18°C."
Rest of June
Looking ahead, the Met Office predicts a "changeable period" for the UK over the next fortnight. This could initially bring outbreaks of heavy rain across the north, possibly accompanied by strong winds, particularly along the coast.
However, through next weekend and into the following week, high pressure is expected to become more dominant, bringing widely dry and settled weather. "Temperatures are likely to be above normal for most parts, and across the southeast in particular it could be very warm or hot at times, especially next weekend," forecasters said.
At the end of June, there is potential for "hot conditions" to develop, especially in the south. By the time July arrives, there is an increasing chance of more unsettled weather and thunderstorms, with temperatures likely to ease back closer to normal for the time of year.
