Met Office: Heat to Return This Weekend with 25-26C in South

The UK's recent cool, showery spell is set to finally give way to warmer and more settled weather, with temperatures rising into the mid-20s for some areas.

Weather Improvement Expected

While Thursday (June 11) is expected to turn wetter and windier for many, conditions should improve into the weekend, especially in the south, with highs of around 25–26C possible on Sunday (June 14). The warmth is likely to linger into Monday (June 15), although forecasters said there is still some uncertainty about how long the heat will last into next week.

Met Office Statement

Met Office Deputy Chief Meteorologist Mark Sidaway said: "The weekend will see drier and more settled conditions, especially in the south, with temperatures feeling pleasant but not exceptionally warm for June. By Saturday, warmer conditions will develop for some, reaching the mid-20s, and Sunday will see warm conditions continue, reaching 25 to 26°C in the south. The start of next week is expected to remain warm, with Monday bringing another largely dry and warm day for most."

Some uncertainty remains around the temperatures continuing further into next week, and the details will become clearer over the coming days.

Water Safety Warning

Anyone planning a trip to the coast is being urged to remember the sea is still much colder than it typically is later in summer, the Met Office warned. Sea surface temperatures are currently around 9C off Scotland, rising to about 13C in the south west of England.

Ashley Jones, Head of Water Safety and Education at the Royal Life Saving Society UK (RLSS UK), said: "We are urging everyone who wants to enjoy water safely this weekend to seek a lifeguarded location wherever possible. Stop and think before getting into water by checking for dangers, such as strong currents or hidden hazards under the surface, wearing a well-fitted wetsuit and entering the cold water gradually. Stay together and always keep children within arm's reach."

Forecast Details

The Met Office forecast that on Friday there will be "rather cloudy in the south with patchy rain in the west". In its outlook, it said: "Brighter for northern areas with showers and some sunny spells. Winds a little lighter and feeling a touch warmer."

Looking ahead, Saturday to Monday should come with "some rain or showers in the north on Saturday, otherwise becoming increasingly settled from the south". The forecasters added: "Mostly dry with sunny spells and turning warmer through the weekend and into Monday."

This comes after the recent announcement that the mercury could reach 30C once more over the forthcoming weekend, just a fortnight after a record-smashing heatwave, according to weather experts.
