Met Office Forecasts 33C Record-Breaking Heatwave Across 21 UK Counties
Met Office: 33C Record Heatwave for 21 Counties This Weekend

The Met Office has announced that temperature records could be shattered over the upcoming Bank Holiday weekend, with forecasts indicating the mercury could soar to as high as 33 degrees Celsius in certain parts of the country. This anticipated surge in temperatures is expected to result in an official heatwave, marking a significant weather event for late May.

Temperature Predictions and Record-Breaking Potential

According to the national weather agency, temperatures will begin to climb on Friday, particularly in southern regions. The forecast suggests that Saturday could see temperatures reach 30C, followed by 32C on Sunday, and a peak of 33C on Monday. Met Office Deputy Chief Forecaster Steve Kocher stated, "It is likely that the May and Spring UK temperature records will be broken over the Bank Holiday weekend." The current record stands at 32.8C, making this weekend's predictions particularly noteworthy.

Official Heatwave Conditions

The anticipated temperatures will constitute an official heatwave, which is declared when three consecutive days exceed the heatwave threshold. This threshold varies by county, ranging from 28C to 25C, and the expected temperatures will surpass these limits. The Met Office indicates that heatwave conditions are likely to be reached in parts of the south-east on Sunday, potentially spreading across central and western England and into Wales.

British Red Cross Issues Heatwave Safety Guidance

In response to the forecasted heatwave, the British Red Cross has released guidance to help the public stay safe. Dafydd Beech, National Community Education Manager at the British Red Cross, emphasized the importance of taking precautions: "As we come into the summer months, warm weather gives us a chance to get out a bit more and enjoy ourselves. It's important to take care while you have fun with friends and family to avoid becoming dehydrated, getting sunburn, or even heat stroke." He added, "Getting into the habit of taking steps whenever temperatures rise can really help. It can be simple things like wearing sunscreen, drinking plenty of fluids, or ensuring you take breaks from the sun. Building these habits early means people are better prepared if hotter weather lasts longer."
