The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for London and southern England, forecasting heavy rain and thunderstorms that could cause travel chaos and localised flooding.
Forecasters predict up to 40mm of rain could fall in just a few hours on Wednesday afternoon and evening, with the worst conditions expected between 2pm and 9pm. The sudden downpours may lead to difficult driving conditions, potential road closures and disruption to public transport.
Areas at Risk
While London faces the most severe warnings, the alert also covers:
- Parts of southeast England
- The Midlands
- East Anglia
Meteorologist Morgan Newton warned: "These thunderstorms could bring intense rainfall very quickly, with the potential for surface water flooding in some areas. We're advising people to check local forecasts and allow extra time for journeys."
Travel Advice
Transport for London has urged commuters to:
- Check TfL updates before travelling
- Allow extra time for journeys
- Be prepared for possible Tube delays
The weather system is expected to move northeastwards overnight, with conditions improving by Thursday morning. However, forecasters warn that similar weather patterns may develop later in the week as unstable air continues to affect the region.
