UK Drivers Urged to Move Cars Before Sunday Heatwave

UK drivers are being urged to move their cars from driveways before Sunday to prepare for an expected return of hot weather. After a recent heatwave, the UK experienced cooler and wetter conditions, but forecasts for Monday, June 15, show temperatures approaching 30°C in some areas.

Why Shade Matters for Parked Cars

Most driveways in the UK are exposed to direct sunlight for much of the day due to modern housing estate designs. Covered driveways and carports are uncommon compared to hotter countries. Experts at Select Car Leasing explain that a vehicle acts like a greenhouse: sunlight passes through windows, heating surfaces like the dashboard and seats, and the heat becomes trapped.

On a 25°C day, the inside of a car can climb above 40°C within 30 minutes. Moving the vehicle into shade prevents this, keeping the interior temperature closer to the outside air.

Important for Electric Vehicle Owners

The AA advises that lithium-ion batteries perform best between 20°C and 25°C. Extreme heat can drain the battery as the thermal management system works to keep it cool. Parking in direct sunlight should be avoided when possible.

Additional Tips to Keep Cars Cool

  • Use reflective windscreen shades to block sunlight from heating the dashboard.
  • In safe locations, leave windows slightly open to allow hot air to escape.
  • Before driving, open the passenger-side window and repeatedly open and close the driver's door to push hot air out.
  • When using air conditioning, direct the first blast of cool air through the footwell vents to force hot air upward and out.

By following these tips, drivers can ensure a more comfortable and safer experience during the upcoming warm weather.
