A Ryanair flight from Manchester to Tenerife turned into a mid-air nightmare when a drunk passenger celebrating his birthday caused chaos, forcing the plane to make an emergency landing.
The disruptive traveller, reportedly intoxicated before boarding, became aggressive and verbally abusive towards both passengers and crew. His behaviour escalated to the point where the captain had no choice but to divert the flight to Porto, Portugal.
Birthday Celebrations Gone Wrong
Witnesses described scenes of utter disruption as the man, believed to be in his 30s, shouted obscenities and refused to follow crew instructions. His alcohol-fuelled antics included:
- Loud, aggressive behaviour towards fellow passengers
- Refusal to remain seated when instructed
- Abusive language directed at cabin crew
Emergency Diversion to Portugal
The situation became so severe that the pilot declared an emergency, landing at Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport in Porto. Portuguese police met the aircraft and removed the disruptive passenger.
A Ryanair spokesperson said: "The crew of this flight from Manchester to Tenerife requested police assistance upon arrival in Porto after a passenger became disruptive in-flight. The aircraft continued to Tenerife following removal of the passenger."
Growing Problem of Air Rage
This incident highlights the increasing issue of disruptive behaviour on flights, particularly involving alcohol. Aviation authorities have repeatedly warned about the dangers of excessive drinking before and during flights.
The unnamed passenger now faces potential criminal charges and a lifetime ban from the airline, joining a growing list of travellers who've learned the hard way that air rage comes with serious consequences.
