Michael Carrick will be keen to secure all three points when Manchester United take on Hull City on the opening day of the 2026/27 Premier League season. The trip to the MKM Stadium will establish the tone for the early stages of the campaign, giving the team a chance to gather momentum ahead of a long season.
Carrick's Remarkable Record
Carrick's remarkable achievements last term saw United secure Champions League football for the first time in several years. He boasts an outstanding record since stepping up as interim manager in January, claiming victory in 12 of 17 league fixtures and suffering just two defeats, resulting in a win rate of 70.6%. The former midfielder was handed a permanent contract by club chiefs last month.
But the expectations will be considerably higher this season for Carrick now that he's in the hot seat. He will need to produce similar results across a longer period, while integrating several new arrivals.
Ederson Set for Debut
Brazil star Ederson is set to become United's first summer arrival. Earlier this month, the Reds struck an agreement with Atalanta to bring in the midfielder, believed to be in the region of £35m plus £3.8m in add-ons. Ederson admitted recently the deal is "practically almost all sorted". With Casemiro's departure and Manuel Ugarte's future unclear, the 26-year-old is expected to form half of the midfield duo on the opening day of the season, marking his introduction to English football.
He received a late call-up to Brazil's World Cup squad as a replacement for the injured Wesley. Ederson made his World Cup debut as a substitute in the 3-0 victory over Haiti on Friday night, meaning he will be match-fit when the new campaign begins.
Fernandes Alternative: Nmecha
It is no secret that United are keen to bring in another midfielder to partner Ederson in the centre of the pitch this summer. West Ham's Mateus Fernandes has been the Reds' primary midfield target in recent weeks, having caught the eye this term before the Hammers' relegation. Yet, despite ticking several boxes for Carrick, the 21-year-old will command a substantial fee in the region of £80m. United will not be held to ransom, however, having already pulled out of the race to sign England midfielder Elliot Anderson for the same reason.
Should they consider Fernandes too expensive at that price, Felix Nmecha of Borussia Dortmund is an outstanding alternative. The 25-year-old, who came through Manchester City's academy, is currently impressing for the German national side at the World Cup. His composed displays in central midfield are precisely what Carrick needs heading into next season. A fee of around £52m is reportedly enough to persuade Dortmund to part with Nmecha, while enabling United to use the remaining Fernandes funds to strengthen other positions within the squad.
Summerville Benched
Fernandes hasn't been the only West Ham star attracting interest from United. It is understood that Netherlands left winger Crysencio Summerville has also caught the eye of Old Trafford bosses. The Irons reportedly need to raise around £120m through player sales this summer as a consequence of their Championship relegation. Summerville could account for nearly half of that figure given his £50m valuation, suggesting the club may be receptive to offers in that ballpark.
The 24-year-old has already netted twice in two World Cup appearances, underlining the danger he poses going forward. Given his eye-catching performances, United will need to move swiftly once the tournament ends to get their man, with Roma also circling with interest. Were Summerville to join United, he could be eased in gradually rather than being thrust straight into the starting line-up, with Patrick Dorgu having firmly established himself as the first-choice left wing option since Carrick took the reins. The Dutchman could still make an impact from the substitutes' bench when called upon.
Carrick Spoilt for Choice
Carrick may find himself spoilt for choice when naming his starting XI to face Sergej Jakirovic's side on the opening day. That could mean some tough calls needing to be made, but a well-stocked squad will be crucial to competing across several competitions this season, with the likes of Summerville (if signed), Kobbie Mainoo and Benjamin Sesko all set to play their part further down the line.
Dream Manchester United starting line-up to face Hull City in full: Senne Lammens; Diogo Dalot, Harry Maguire, Lisandro Martinez, Luke Shaw; Felix Nmecha, Ederson; Amad, Bruno Fernandes, Patrick Dorgu; Bryan Mbeumo.
