Stunning Astronomy Photographer of the Year 2024 Entries Revealed

The Royal Observatory Greenwich has unveiled an extraordinary collection of celestial masterpieces, with the shortlisted entries for the esteemed Astronomy Photographer of the Year 2024 competition now revealed. This year's submissions present a breathtaking visual journey through our universe, captured by both amateur stargazers and seasoned astrophotographers from across the globe.

A Celestial Showcase of Cosmic Artistry

Among the spectacular entries is a mesmerising capture of the Aurora Borealis, or Northern Lights, painting the night sky in vibrant hues of green and purple above the iconic Stoer Head Lighthouse in Scotland. This stunning image exemplifies the perfect marriage of earthly landmarks and celestial phenomena, creating a scene of otherworldly beauty.

The competition, now in its sixteenth year, continues to attract exceptional talent, with photographers employing increasingly sophisticated techniques to document the cosmos. From the intricate details of our solar system's planets to the majestic swirl of distant galaxies millions of light-years away, each photograph tells a unique story of our place in the universe.

International Talent and Diverse Perspectives

This year's entries demonstrate remarkable diversity in both subject matter and technique. Participants have captured everything from the serene beauty of meteor showers streaking across dark sky reserves to the dramatic collision of cosmic gases in vibrant nebulas. The competition features several categories including:

  • Our Moon and Our Sun
  • Planets, Comets, and Asteroids
  • Stars and Nebulae
  • Galaxies
  • Northern Lights
  • People and Space

Many photographers have spent countless nights and travelled to remote locations to capture these perfect moments, often battling challenging weather conditions and light pollution to achieve their spectacular shots.

Celebrating Astronomical Excellence

Organised by Royal Museums Greenwich, the competition not only celebrates photographic excellence but also serves to inspire public interest in astronomy and space science. The winning images will be announced on 12th September, with a special awards ceremony followed by a public exhibition at the National Maritime Museum.

The overall winner will receive a grand prize of £10,000, while category winners will be awarded £1,500 each. The collection of shortlisted photographs stands as a testament to human curiosity and our enduring fascination with the night sky, reminding us of the incredible beauty that exists beyond our planet.
