Overwatch Fans Demand New Hero Anran's Appearance Changed

Blizzard Entertainment has announced a major update for Overwatch, introducing five new heroes in a rebooted Season 1 starting on February 10, 2026. The new roster includes two support, two damage, and one tank hero, bringing the total to 50. However, one of the damage heroes, Anran, has drawn criticism from the community over her appearance.

Anran is a fire-wielding damage hero who uses a fan to throw fireballs and set opponents alight. While her gameplay has been well-received, players have accused Blizzard of 'same face syndrome', noting that Anran's facial features closely resemble those of existing heroes like Juno. Comparisons on the Overwatch subreddit highlight the similarities, with some fans expressing disappointment that her in-game model differs significantly from her concept art.

In response, players have created edited versions of Anran's face, calling for Blizzard to make changes. One Reddit user wrote, 'If the internet bullied a huge movie studio into changing a character's face, then we can do the same for Overwatch,' referencing the redesign of Sonic the Hedgehog after fan backlash. Blizzard has not yet indicated whether it will alter Anran's appearance.

Despite the controversy, Anran's gameplay has been praised. Players have described her abilities as 'dope' and 'super dope', though some note she struggles against characters with self-cleanses. The update also introduces a narrative-driven approach with cinematics and comic books, with the first instalments already available.

Overwatch Season 1 launches on February 10, 2026, and Blizzard faces the challenge of balancing all 50 heroes to ensure a fun experience.
