US Cake Mix Recall Upgraded to Highest Risk Level Over Death Threat

A recall of cake mixes distributed in the United States has been elevated to the highest risk level by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) due to potential fatal allergic reactions.

The recall, originally announced in December, affects 50-pound multi-wall bags of Spice Cake Mix and Swiss Chocolate Cake Mix produced by Dallas-based B.C. Williams Bakery Service. The products contain undeclared milk allergen not listed on the label, posing a serious health risk to individuals with dairy allergies.

The FDA has classified the recall as Class I, indicating a reasonable probability that consuming the product could cause serious adverse health consequences or death. It is not yet known where the mixes were sold or distributed.

Milk is one of the nine major food allergens in the US, and reactions can range from hives and lip swelling to life-threatening anaphylaxis, which may involve fatal respiratory problems and shock. Consumers who have purchased the affected mixes are urged to avoid using them, especially if they have a dairy allergy.

The Independent has contacted B.C. Williams Bakery Service for comment. This recall follows a separate incident in January where thousands of M&M's units were recalled across 20 states due to missing allergen warnings for milk, soy, and peanuts.
