WhatsApp is rolling out a significant new feature that allows users to communicate without sharing their phone numbers. Instead, users can reserve an optional username, similar to Instagram, X, or Telegram. The update is gradually becoming available, and millions of UK users are urged to check their settings immediately.
How to Reserve Your WhatsApp Username
To reserve a username, users need to update to the latest version of WhatsApp and navigate to Settings, Account, then Username. If the feature is available, they can create and secure a username within moments. WhatsApp announced that usernames will become available gradually over the coming months, and users will receive a notification when the feature launches in their country.
Why This Update Matters for Privacy
This update addresses a longstanding privacy issue on an app used by more than three billion people worldwide, according to the Associated Press. Until now, sharing your WhatsApp typically meant providing your phone number, which is not always suitable for new contacts, holiday hosts, marketplace buyers, community groups, or professional connections. The feature is voluntary, but those wanting a tidy, memorable name may wish to secure it quickly.
Tech Expert Warns: Act Fast to Claim Your Username
Ed Stapleton, tech expert at Clicks Geek, advises users not to ignore the update. “If you have a common name, a business name, a creator name, or a username you already use on Instagram or Facebook, it is worth checking availability sooner rather than later,” he said. “The shorter and simpler usernames are usually the first to go on any platform. You do not want to come back months later and find your preferred name has already been claimed.”
Username Guidelines and Security Tips
TechCrunch reported that usernames can be between three and 35 characters, with WhatsApp reserving certain usernames for prominent celebrities, VIPs, and organisations. Users are advised to avoid usernames containing excessive personal details, such as birth years, full dates of birth, home addresses, or workplace information. Ed added: “The best usernames are memorable but not revealing. Using your full name and year of birth might be easy, but it also gives away information you may not need to share with strangers.”
What If the Feature Isn't Visible Yet?
If the username option isn't displaying yet, users should not worry. The rollout is gradual, meaning it may not be accessible on every account at the same time. Users are encouraged to keep their app updated and check back regularly.
