The Formula 1 drivers' championship standings have been significantly altered following a dramatic revision to the Monaco Grand Prix result, announced just ahead of the Barcelona Grand Prix.
Gasly's Penalty and Reinstatement
Pierre Gasly initially crossed the finish line in third place, securing what seemed to be a hard-earned podium for Alpine. However, race stewards quickly issued him two separate time penalties totaling 10 seconds for allegedly speeding in the pit lane during the Grand Prix. This post-race penalty relegated the French driver from third to seventh in the official classification, costing Alpine their first top-three finish in over two seasons and leaving the team deeply frustrated.
Alpine immediately challenged the ruling by exercising its right of review, uncovering evidence that the pit-lane timing loops were malfunctioning. The team successfully proved that the FIA and FOM were aware of a technical glitch with the hardware before the race started, meaning the speed data used against Gasly was flawed. After reviewing the new timing evidence, the FIA stewards admitted the error and rescinded Gasly's time penalties, reinstating him to his rightful third place.
Impact on Other Drivers
Red Bull's rookie driver Isack Hadjar is the person most negatively impacted by this retrospective amendment. He had inherited the final spot on the podium due to Gasly's initial demotion but must now hand that trophy back and drop to fourth place. Several other drivers who benefited from Gasly's initial drop are also affected: Oscar Piastri, Liam Lawson, and Arvid Lindblad all drop by one position in the revised Monaco race results to accommodate Gasly's return to P3.
Updated Championship Standings
With his 15 points for third place restored, Gasly has had a major boost in the drivers' standings. He jumps up to 35 points total, moving into eighth spot ahead of Hadjar and Lawson. Hadjar's points tally drops from 29 to 26 after losing the third-place points, stalling his momentum and dealing a minor blow to Red Bull's position in the constructors' title race. The updated standings now show: 5th Piastri (58 points); 7th Gasly (35); 9th Hadjar (26); 10th Lawson (24).
