FIFA has announced that the winners of the 2026 World Cup will receive American-style championship rings, a first for the tournament. The custom jewellery, described by FIFA as bringing 'iconic American sporting tradition to global football,' will be presented alongside the traditional golden FIFA World Cup trophy.
Ring Design and Distribution
The gold rings will feature blue gems and be engraved with 'FIFA World Cup 2026 Champions.' One side will display an image of the World Cup, while the other will carry a custom icon representing the winning team. A total of 2,026 rings will be minted, with 30 given to the champion team, custom-fitted for players and staff. The remaining 1,996 rings will be sold to the general public. Players will receive a temporary replica at full-time, later replaced with their personalized ring.
Context and Impact
Championship rings are a staple in American sports, awarded to winners in leagues like the NFL and NHL. This move is part of FIFA's broader strategy to appeal to American audiences, following the introduction of hydration breaks that split matches into four quarters and a half-time show at the final. The 2026 World Cup final is set to feature Argentina and Spain in New Jersey, with the winner becoming the first to receive this prize.
