Bellingham Strikes Barco in Post-Match Confrontation
New footage from the aftermath of England's World Cup defeat to Argentina appears to show Jude Bellingham striking Valentin Barco unprovoked. The incident occurred after the final whistle in Atlanta, where Argentina secured a 2-1 victory to reach the tournament's showpiece.
Argentina fought back from a goal down after Anthony Gordon had given England the lead. Enzo Fernandez and Lautaro Martinez scored to turn the match around, with England left frustrated as they sat deeper in the second half.
Barco's Earlier Provocation
Despite being an unused substitute, Barco had previously wound up England's players. The 21-year-old charged towards the Three Lions squad after Fernandez's equalizer instead of celebrating with his own teammates, forcing an official to intervene and drag him away. Barco avoided any sanctions at the time.
According to reports from the Mirror, that incident remained fresh in Bellingham's memory. Fresh footage captures the Real Madrid midfielder observing Argentina's festivities at the final whistle before Barco joined a cluster of teammates. Bellingham had exchanged handshakes with another player before glancing downwards and then spotting Barco.
Scuffle Ensues
The 23-year-old stormed across and caught Barco in the face before both players exchanged shoves and heated words. A minor scuffle broke out, with Morgan Rogers and Bellingham requiring separation. England reserve goalkeeper Dean Henderson stepped in as a shield while Argentinian players attempted to reach his teammate.
Tuchel Defends Tactics
England manager Thomas Tuchel stood by his decision to bring on additional defenders in the second half, while commending his squad's attitude. "You can discuss this with a million coaches but I have to make a decision on the pitch," he said. "I analysed the match and I did it a certain way so that's my responsibility. In the moment, no regrets. The team gave everything and we were very, very close. We deserved to be up 1-0."
Tuchel added: "We played one of our better matches, maybe our best match in the circumstances. The team was top, we couldn't get over the line but no regrets. I think we saw the mentality throughout the match and the strong group. We played the matches how they were, we played against strong teams in the group, travelled a lot of miles, played at altitude, we played with 10 men, we played in the heat and we overcame every obstacle. We were very close today. It's not the moment to analyse the full tournament, we just went out because we lost a crucial match."
