Peter Wright's family is said to be 'devastated' after the two-time world darts champion gave away his prized replica trophies on a 'bad day', prompting his wife to intervene publicly to reclaim the sentimental items.
Wright's Wife Speaks Out on Social Media
Joanne Wright took to X (formerly Twitter) after learning that her husband's World Championship and World Matchplay replica trophies had been listed for sale by Dart Gear Competitions. The items also included a signed photo from Wright's 2021 Matchplay victory.
In a series of posts, Joanne wrote: 'No they aren't for sale. They weren't approved to be sold. They belong to our children.' She added: 'It was never our intention for these sentimental items to be sold off in this manner, Peter gave them up on a bad day really.'
She explained that the trophies were intended as keepsakes for their children, noting: 'The world's trophy was a wedding present to our daughter Naomi. The large frames I bought them.'
Dart Gear Competitions Responds
Dart Gear Competitions, which had purchased the trophies from Wright, responded via a Facebook video on Tuesday evening. The company stated they were happy to 'reverse the transaction' and return the items to the darts star.
Their statement detailed the sequence of events: 'It all started on Thursday, Peter gave me a call asking if I wanted to buy some darts which I did. Over the weekend there were various messages from Peter asking if I'd like to purchase his trophies. On Sunday I agreed a price for the Matchplay and World Championship trophy and some shirts.'
They added: 'Peter we've tried to call you, these were bought in good faith. So Peter all you have to do is give me a call. We've put the trophies into storage, you're more than welcome to have them back. All we want to do is have the reverse transaction done.'
Wright's Recent Career Struggles
Peter Wright, known as 'Snakebite', is regarded as one of the finest players in darts history, with two world titles, one World Matchplay, a UK Open, and two World Cups to his name. However, he has struggled with form in recent years, plummeting to world No. 34 in the rankings.
At the 2025 World Championship, Wright forged a respectable run, defeating defending champion Luke Humphries before losing in the quarter-finals to Stephen Bunting. His last major title came at the German Darts Championship in 2024, where he beat world No. 1 Luke Littler.
Family's Efforts to Reclaim Trophies
Joanne Wright expressed her distress, saying: 'We are devastated that he did this.' She has left a message for the sellers and hopes to arrange the return of the trophies: 'So we are happy to pay back what was paid to use to receive these items back for our family. I've left a message for someone to call me from the people selling.'
The family's plea appears to have been heard, as Dart Gear Competitions has offered to reverse the sale and deliver the trophies back to Wright at no additional cost.
