Danny Willett Backs Brooks Koepka's PGA Tour Return to Challenge McIlroy for Majors
Willett Backs Koepka's PGA Tour Return to Rival McIlroy

In an exclusive interview, fellow major champion Danny Willett has voiced strong support for Brooks Koepka's return to the PGA Tour, predicting the American star will intensify the rivalry with Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler while pursuing additional major titles.

Special Treatment for a Five-Time Major Winner

Willett, speaking ahead of the Hero Dubai Desert Classic, argued that Koepka deserved the special treatment enabling his return under the new Returning Members Program. This initiative permits LIV Golf stars who have secured major victories since 2022 to rejoin the PGA Tour without facing a suspension.

"The PGA Tour will be better with him - that is a fact," Willett stated emphatically. "Regardless of what some people say or want or how unfair it is, he's a five-time major champion, he is a bloody good golfer, and people will enjoy seeing Brooks play golf at PGA Tour events."

Navigating the Rules of Re-entry

The former world number one is set to make his comeback at the Farmers Insurance Open in California next week. Koepka's return comes after significant financial adjustments, including forfeiting $15 million from the final year of his five-year LIV Golf contract and committing $5 million to charitable causes.

Willett acknowledged that some players might feel aggrieved by the preferential treatment but maintained that exceptional achievements warrant different standards. "Some guys will feel a bit hard done by it, but until you've won five Majors, unfortunately for those guys, there are a set of rules that apply to certain people because they're incredibly good at their trade," he explained.

A Renewed Focus on Major Championships

According to Willett, who has known Koepka since their early careers on the Challenge Tour and European Tour, the American's primary motivation remains adding to his major tally. "He works hard and his burning desire is Major championships," Willett revealed. "I can only assume that in order for him to feel like he's ready for that he wanted to play more golf against Rory and Scottie and the boys more often."

The English golfer suggested that Koepka has specific targets in mind. "In his head I assume he's got a number of Majors he wants to get to and all he's trying to do is be best prepared for that," Willett added, highlighting the competitive drive that has defined Koepka's career.

The Changing Landscape of Professional Golf

The discussion around Koepka's return occurs against the backdrop of evolving dynamics in professional golf. LIV Golf, backed by Newcastle owners the Public Investment Fund, made substantial investments to attract top talent during its initial seasons, with Jon Rahm's December 2023 signing representing the last major acquisition.

This year's recruitment efforts have thus far focused on less prominent names, reflecting shifting strategies within the breakaway tour. Meanwhile, established PGA Tour stars like Tommy Fleetwood continue to evaluate their options based on competitive aspirations rather than financial incentives alone.

Fleetwood's Perspective on Career Goals

World number three Tommy Fleetwood, who was previously targeted by LIV Golf but has seen his value increase significantly following a $10 million victory at the Tour Championships and a standout performance at the Ryder Cup, offered his perspective on the current climate.

"They haven't sniffed around me in this postseason," Fleetwood admitted regarding LIV's approach. "I think you definitely see changes, and I think some very good golfers have gone over to LIV and have chosen to go to LIV."

The Dubai-based golfer, who is targeting his first major title in 2026, emphasized the importance of aligning competition with personal ambitions. "I think, in general, people want to play where their goals or dreams are aligned," he noted. "They want to play in the place where they feel they can chase them."

Fleetwood concluded with a clear statement of his own priorities: "Personally, I'm playing where I feel like I can still chase my dreams, and I'm in the best place to be the best golfer I can be."
