Stade Toulousain delivered a breathtaking masterclass of attacking rugby, running in eleven tries to demolish a depleted Sale Sharks side 77-7 in the final round of the Champions Cup pool stages. The emphatic victory, which avenged Toulouse's defeat to Saracens the previous week, secured their place in the competition's last 16 alongside their opponents, despite the one-sided scoreline.
Ramos' Kicking Perfection Punishes Sale
The individual performance of the match belonged to French full-back Thomas Ramos, who finished with a personal haul of 27 points. His remarkable contribution included a second-half try and a flawless display from the tee, landing 11 conversions from 11 attempts. His final kick, struck from the wrong touchline, was a statement of sheer brilliance, underlining his reputation as one of the world's most lethal goal-kickers.
Despite both teams having already qualified for the knockout phase, Toulouse began the match outside the automatic qualification places in fifth. Any fleeting notion of an upset was extinguished within minutes, as the home side's power and precision proved far too much for a youthful Sale squad missing 13 first-team players.
One-Way Traffic from the Start
The French giants signalled their intent early, with the colossal Emmanuel Meafou powering over from an attacking lineout in just the third minute. A second try from hooker Julien Marchand followed, before Toulouse unleashed the dazzling backline moves for which they are famed.
A slick move released Matthis Lebel, who found the supporting Antoine Dupont for the scrum-half's first score. The bonus point was secured on the stroke of half-time through Kalvin Gourgues, a score compounded for Sale by two yellow cards shown to Alex Wills and Sam Dugdale in the build-up.
To their immense credit, the 13 men of Sale started the second half superbly, scoring their sole try through Tom Curtis just four minutes after the restart. However, that moment of resistance merely preceded the floodgates opening.
A Try-Scoring Exhibition
With their full complement restored, Toulouse ran riot. Dupont grabbed his second, finishing another sublime team move sparked by a Ramos cross-kick. Further tries followed at regular intervals, with Lebel grabbing a double and replacements Baptiste Graou and Josh Brennan also crossing.
Incredibly, the margin of victory could have been even greater, as Toulouse had three further tries disallowed. Sale's misery was complete when they received a third yellow card, shown to Hyron Andrews for a high tackle. The 77-7 result stands as Sale Sharks' heaviest-ever defeat.
The result confirms both teams' progression to the Champions Cup last 16, but in starkly different moods. Toulouse have sent a formidable warning to the rest of Europe, while Sale will hope to welcome back key personnel for the sterner tests that lie ahead in the knockout stages.
