Chad Gilbert, the guitarist for the renowned pop-punk band New Found Glory, has undergone emergency brain surgery following a frightening diagnosis. The 45-year-old musician required the procedure after doctors discovered three tumours in his brain during a CT scan.
Fall Leads to Terrifying Discovery
The medical emergency began in February when Gilbert experienced a fall that prompted a visit to A&E. This incident occurred just days after he struggled to control his left hand during a performance in Nashville, followed by weakness in his leg. Medical professionals conducted a CT scan that revealed the presence of three tumours in his brain, necessitating immediate surgical intervention.
Successful Surgery and Immediate Recovery
Gilbert underwent emergency surgery to remove the tumours, and he has reported that the operation was successful. In an emotional Instagram post, he shared that he regained function of his left hand immediately following the procedure. His radiation oncologist provided encouraging words, describing the situation as "not a fatal blow and not the end of your story, just the beginning of a new chapter."
The musician acknowledged that his recovery has been "bumpy at times" but expressed feeling much better and getting stronger daily. He thanked fans for their supportive messages and hinted at future updates, stating, "More stories to come when my brain is working well again." Gilbert also shared his anticipation to share more music and fun with his audience as he continues to heal.
History of Health Struggles
This latest health crisis follows years of medical challenges for Gilbert. He was first diagnosed with rare adrenal cancer in December 2021 after his wife found him unconscious at their home. At that time, doctors discovered a substantial tumour on his adrenal gland that had metastasised to his liver.
Medical teams removed the mass along with half his liver and gallbladder, and he was declared cancer-free the following month. However, the disease reappeared in his spine in August of that year, requiring surgical removal of a vertebra and replacement with an artificial disc. A year later, additional nodules were found in his lungs, leading to aggressive chemotherapy treatment.
Band Legacy and Fan Support
New Found Glory rose to fame in the late 1990s and achieved mainstream success with their third album, Sticks and Stones. The band has been acknowledged by numerous groups as a significant source of inspiration in the pop-punk genre. Gilbert's health journey has drawn widespread support from fans and fellow musicians alike.
Alongside his recovery announcement, Gilbert shared several images from his hospital stay, including one of him holding a message from his four-year-old daughter.
