NBA Star Steven Adams Chooses Floor Over Luxury Bed Despite Vast Fortune
Houston Rockets centre Steven Adams, whose career earnings are approaching the remarkable $200 million mark, could undoubtedly afford a bespoke, king-sized bed to accommodate his imposing 6ft11 frame. However, the 32-year-old New Zealander has revealed a surprisingly frugal preference, opting to sleep directly on the floor of his residence.
A Spartan Sleeping Setup Revealed on Social Media
In a recent video posted on the X page @Funakistats, which is dedicated to chronicling his career, Adams provided a glimpse into his minimalist lifestyle. "This is my place," Adams stated, gesturing around a small, sparsely furnished room. "This is where I sleep. I usually sleep here." The footage shows his sleeping arrangement: a simple sleeping bag placed atop a thin foam pad, a setup that could only generously be described as a mattress.
"So I put this down," Adams continued, explaining his choice. "Sleeping bag, that's better for my back. I like sleeping on the ground." This revelation is not an isolated incident. At the beginning of his tenure with the Rockets in October 2024, Adams shared a photograph of an even more austere room, featuring nothing but a single mattress on the floor, accompanied by the caption "New beginnings."
A Contrasting Lifestyle: Vast Wealth and Simple Tastes
Adams's ascetic sleeping habits stand in stark contrast to his substantial financial success. In June, he agreed to a three-year, $39 million contract extension with the Rockets, securing his position through the 2027-28 season. His career earnings currently total $184 million and are projected to reach $209 million by the conclusion of his current deal.
Beyond basketball, Adams maintains a diversified portfolio, including ownership of a picturesque dairy farm on the North Island of New Zealand. As he described on the 'Young Man and the Three' podcast in December, the farm operates with roughly 500 dairy cows and also produces kiwi fruit and avocado. "It's kind of right on the coast, real beautiful piece of land," Adams noted.
Injury Concerns and Team Performance
This latest insight into Adams's personal life emerges as the veteran centre faces a significant setback. He has been ruled out indefinitely after suffering a grade 3 ankle sprain, the latest in a series of ankle issues that have plagued him since 2019. Despite his absence, the Houston Rockets continue to perform strongly in the competitive Western Conference, holding a solid 26-16 record which positions them fourth in the standings as they contend for a playoff berth.
A Philosophy of Simplicity
Adams's approach extends beyond his sleeping quarters. During the same social media tour of his home, when questioned about why he hadn't upgraded his 13-year-old guitar amplifiers, he offered a characteristically straightforward response. "No need to," Adams said. "And I'm not good enough to get like something more fancy. I don't know… It still does good stuff." This philosophy underscores a deliberate choice to prioritise function and personal comfort over opulence, despite the multi-million dollar resources at his disposal.
