Shoaib Bashir Targets England Test Recall Through County Cricket Performance

England spinner Shoaib Bashir has expressed his delight at securing valuable game time in the County Championship, following an impressive display that saw him return his best first-class figures for Derbyshire. The 22-year-old, who was overlooked for all five Ashes Tests during England's 4-1 defeat last summer, believes regular red-ball cricket is essential for his development and hopes it will lead to a Test recall.

Career-Best Figures at Old Trafford

Playing in just his fourth match since last July's Test against India at Lord's, Bashir claimed four wickets for 76 runs from his 20 overs against Lancashire at Old Trafford. This performance surpassed his previous county best of three for 67, which he achieved for Somerset against Hampshire in 2023. The off-spinner's wickets included key breakthroughs, with Josh Bohannon playing on for 73, a fine caught and bowled to remove Michael Jones, and dismissals of Tom Hartley and Tom Bailey.

Strategic Move to Derbyshire

Ahead of this season, Bashir made the significant decision to leave Somerset for Derbyshire, specifically to secure regular red-ball starts. With 68 wickets in 19 Tests to date, he felt this move was necessary to push his claims for an England return, especially after batting all-rounder Will Jacks was controversially preferred as the sole spinning option during the Ashes.

"Just having some game time is quite nice," Bashir said at Old Trafford. "Getting to bowl overs at this time of year, especially as a spinner, is very important. As I say, I'm still young as a spinner. I feel like they mature quite late."

Development and Communication with England Management

Bashir emphasized that exposure to the County Championship early in the season is vital for his growth. "And for me to get exposure to the County Championship this early in the season and bowl as many overs as I have is very important for my development. And it will stand me in good stead moving forward," he added. His performance at Old Trafford marked a strong recovery from a sluggish start to the season, where he took just two wickets in Derbyshire's home match against Worcestershire last week.

The spinner also revealed he maintains regular contact with England management, particularly spin bowling coach Jeetan Patel. "I'm in contact with the (England) management, with the ECB," Bashir stated. "I speak to them pretty regularly. Jeetan Patel is my go-to man, who I work with quite closely. So me and him have regular conversations, chats about different games." This communication could prove crucial as England look towards June's Test series against New Zealand, with Bashir's performance sure to have caught the eye of selectors.

Execution and Role Adaptation

Reflecting on his bowling strategy at Old Trafford, Bashir explained, "I think it was a position where I needed to attack by containing. My role on this wicket was slightly different to times when I normally bowl. Luckily I got to execute my plan and it worked." This adaptability and successful execution underscore his potential as a key asset for England's future Test campaigns, as he continues to hone his skills through consistent county cricket participation.
