Just over a month after suffering a devastating crash that shattered her leg at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan and Cortina, American skiing icon Lindsey Vonn is already up and moving again, showcasing a remarkable recovery journey.
Visual Proof of Progress
In a video shared on her Instagram account, Vonn displayed her significant progress while wearing a black boot around her right ankle. Using crutches for support, she was able to put weight on her right foot and push herself up from a bench. The footage then showed her walking with the assistance of those crutches, a testament to her determination and resilience.
Signs of Major Surgery
On her opposite leg, visible signs of the extensive surgery she underwent were apparent in the form of large gashes. Vonn captioned her post with an inspiring message: 'No matter how hard I get knocked down I will always find a way to get back up! One step at a time!'
The Horrifying Crash Details
This recovery is particularly astonishing given the severity of the crash that the 41-year-old skier endured. Vonn had been hoping to compete for a second career gold medal in the women's downhill event at the Olimpia delle Tofane course, a venue where she had historically dominated throughout her illustrious career.
During her final run, tragedy struck as she went airborne and clipped the second gate, causing her to spin out and crash on the same leg that had suffered a torn ACL less than a week prior. The impact was so severe that she came perilously close to losing her leg entirely, resulting in a broken left leg.
Immediate Aftermath and Medical Response
Following the crash, Vonn was heard screaming in pain as medical personnel quickly surrounded her. She was subsequently strapped to a gurney and airlifted away by helicopter for urgent medical attention.
Extensive Surgical Procedures
Vonn underwent a total of five surgeries to address her injuries—four procedures in Italy and an additional one in the United States. The most recent operation was a six-hour marathon surgery aimed at reconstructing the leg and covering the skin to prevent infection.
Last month, Vonn humorously referred to herself as 'bionic' after these surgeries left her with dozens of metal screws embedded in her leg. This adds to the existing titanium implants in her body from a right knee reconstruction she underwent back in 2024.
Recalling the Trauma
In an interview with Vanity Fair, Vonn revealed that the pain from the incident is 'seared into my brain' and that it required every ounce of her strength to maintain her sanity while hospitalized in Italy. She detailed an initial CT scan at the Olympic clinic, describing how halfway through the procedure, she began sweating profusely from the extreme pain.
'I screamed at the top of my lungs: Get me out. It just wouldn't dissipate. It wouldn't let up. It's seared into my brain,' Vonn recounted, highlighting the intense physical and emotional toll of the accident.
Despite these challenges, Lindsey Vonn's latest video serves as a powerful symbol of her unwavering spirit and commitment to recovery, inspiring fans and fellow athletes alike with her courageous comeback journey.
