Homeowners searching for a natural way to clean hardwood floors may find the answer in their kitchen cupboards. According to enthusiasts on the Our Old House Facebook page, black tea is an effective and inexpensive cleaner that can restore shine to dusty wooden floors.
Group member Hirley Shaw shared a photo of her gleaming 77-year-old unfinished hardwood floor, explaining: “I clean them with a gallon of lukewarm black tea.” The high tannin content in black tea enhances the wood’s natural colour while cutting through grease and grime, leaving floors revitalised.
Other users reported similar success. Deborah Hertz noted that her mother used black tea water on floors that were “dried up and faded,” and after years of use, they became “a rich, beautiful colour.” Norma Barber recalled church cleaners using black tea to keep dust down after events.
For best results, boil one gallon of water and steep eight tea bags for five minutes. Remove the bags, let the liquid cool completely to avoid damaging the wood, then transfer to a mop bucket. Mop following the grain of the wood. Some users also add a drop of lavender oil for a pleasant scent.
Black tea can also disguise scuffs and scratches. Glenda Headrick advised using a used, wet tea bag to rub over scuff marks until they stain. Thomas Marallo said his grandfather, a furniture store worker, used black tea for cleaning and covering scratches.
Lifestyle blogger Laura from Our Oily House recommends adding olive oil to condition the wood and boost shine. After brewing six tea bags in boiling water for ten minutes, let cool, mix in olive oil, and apply with a mop or spray bottle. She describes black tea as “the perfect cleaner for wood” due to its mild acidity and antibacterial properties.
