Anthony Elanga Faces World Cup Bench Role After Tough Newcastle Season
Elanga Sidelined for Sweden World Cup Opener?

Newcastle United winger Anthony Elanga is facing another setback as he is reportedly set to be sidelined for Sweden's World Cup opener against Tunisia. The 24-year-old, who joined the Magpies from Nottingham Forest for £55 million, endured a difficult first season on Tyneside, failing to score in the Premier League and being relegated to the bench.

Elanga's Struggles at Newcastle

Elanga's move to Newcastle was expected to be a major step forward after his impressive performances at Forest, where he contributed goals and assists. However, he was unable to replicate that form in black and white, scoring only one goal all season—in the League Cup against Manchester City. By the end of the campaign, manager Eddie Howe preferred Jacob Murphy and Harvey Barnes on the right side of attack.

World Cup Hopes Dashed

Elanga had been hoping for a strong World Cup with Sweden to make up for his disappointing club season. However, Sweden assistant coach Seb Larsson, the former Sunderland midfielder, was photographed with a team sheet that appeared to show the reserve lineup for the Tunisia match. The formation included Elanga as a striker, suggesting he is not in the starting XI.

According to Swedish media outlet Sportbladet, the likely starting lineup for Sweden against Tunisia features Alexander Isak and Viktor Gyokeres in attack, with Benjamin Nygren potentially on the wing. This would leave Elanga on the bench, a blow for the winger who has been eager to impress on the international stage.

Injury Scare Ahead of Tournament

Elanga's World Cup preparations were also hampered by an injury scare during a pre-tournament friendly against Greece. He clashed knees with an opponent and required treatment, prompting concern from teammates. He was taken to hospital for tests but has since recovered, saying: "When you get pain in your knee, you can get worried, but it feels good. It feels calm. The pain will go away in a day or two. It's completely okay."

Despite the setback, Elanga remains hopeful of making an impact for Sweden during the World Cup, even if he starts on the bench. His focus will be on regaining his form and proving his worth to both club and country.
