Derby 10k Race Course Found 400 Metres Short Following Organisational Blunder

Participants in the Derby 10k race experienced a mix of elation and subsequent dismay as they crossed the finish line, with many initially thrilled at what they believed were personal best performances. However, their joy turned to frustration when it was revealed that the course had been measured incorrectly, coming up 400 metres short of the official 10-kilometre distance.

Flood Defence Works Blamed for Course Measurement Error

Event organisers from the Derby County Community Trust have attributed the mistake to ongoing flood defence construction within the city, which necessitated alterations to the traditional race route. This adjustment required an official re-measurement by a certified member of the Association of UK Course Measurers (AUKCM), a trusted partner in such events.

Despite these precautions, the revised course still fell significantly short. Runners began raising concerns immediately after the race when their GPS tracking devices consistently showed distances around 9.6 to 9.68 kilometres rather than the full 10k.

Runners Express Disappointment Over Shortened Course

Andy Green, one of the participants, voiced his frustration: '9.6 on my watch, it's a poor show when a course can't be measured correctly. I thought I had a PB, but if I had done the full 10k it wasn't.' Another runner, Rob Chilton, added: 'According to Strava it was 9.68km for me. Disappointed it was short.' The situation prompted some humorous suggestions that the event should be renamed the 'Derby 9.6k'.

The trust has launched a comprehensive review of the course measurement process following these complaints. A spokesperson acknowledged the error, stating: 'We share the disappointment that this year's race didn't meet our usual high standards and we are grateful for the understanding and feedback we've received from the running community.'

Official Verification Confirms Course Shortage

The Association of UK Course Measurers conducted a verification measurement on March 17, 2026, which confirmed the course as run was approximately 400 metres short of the required distance. In their statement, AUKCM acknowledged: 'AUKCM acknowledges the error and the impact on runners' results.'

According to the trust, following the initial re-measurement, it was stipulated that the start and finish lines should be altered from their previous positions. However, they only became aware of the persistent distance issue after receiving direct feedback from participants whose GPS devices revealed the discrepancy.

Event Details and Historical Context

The Derby 10k, which has been running since 2002 and raises funds for the Derby County Community Trust, attracted over 3,000 participants this year. Sponsored by HUUB Design, the event typically follows a route from Pride Park Stadium (home of Derby County FC) to Derbion shopping centre, Derby Cathedral, past the Silk Mill, and back along the River Derwent to the stadium.

In February, organisers had announced that a section between 8km and 9km would be re-routed due to the ongoing flood defence work, but this adjustment ultimately contributed to the measurement error that left the entire course short.

The trust has apologised for the errors and expressed gratitude for participants' patience, concluding: 'Thank you for your patience and continued support. We look forward to welcoming you back to the Derby 10K next year.'
