Businessman tried to fund Lowe's Leinster stay: O'Driscoll

Brian O'Driscoll has disclosed that an unnamed businessman attempted to intervene financially to keep James Lowe at Leinster, but the deal was too far gone. The revelation comes after Lowe's emotional departure from the Irish province after nearly a decade, with the winger heading to Japan.

Businessman's Offer to Keep Lowe

Speaking on Off the Ball, O'Driscoll said: "I won't mention any names, but I had someone call me three weeks ago. A very successful businessman, saying, 'I don't want any credit, I don't want my name associated with it, but we need to make sure that James Lowe stays in Ireland. I'm more than happy to try and make up the difference.'" O'Driscoll relayed the offer to Leinster, but by then, the move was already set in motion.

Lowe's exit was confirmed earlier this month after weeks of speculation. Reports suggest a one-year extension was agreed, but the Irish Rugby Football Union (IRFU) withdrew the offer, instead proposing reduced terms. O'Driscoll noted that Lowe was not on a national contract, meaning Leinster covered his salary, not the IRFU.

Lowe's Impact and Fan Sentiment

Lowe, a New Zealand-born project player, became a fan favourite and key figure for Ireland, earning caps and playing in the British and Irish Lions. O'Driscoll emphasized: "It just shows the popularity and the kind of generic understanding that James Lowe has been brilliant for Ireland. He's really taken it to heart."

Lowe was visibly emotional after Leinster's URC final victory at Croke Park last week. His departure leaves a gap ahead of the World Cup next year, with many feeling he still had a significant role to play for Ireland.

Context of the Departure

The back-end of Leinster's season was overshadowed by Lowe's impending move. Despite offers from multiple parties to bridge the financial gap, Lowe's exit to Japan was inevitable. O'Driscoll added: "I believe that he wasn't the only one that offered that, but unfortunately the horse had bolted at that stage."
