In a major broadcasting coup, legendary football striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic has officially joined Fox Sports as a studio analyst for the upcoming summer World Cup. The 44-year-old Swedish icon, renowned for his forthright personality and supreme self-confidence, will feature prominently in Fox's coverage throughout the tournament.
A Star-Studded Studio Lineup
Ibrahimovic will be part of an impressive Fox Studio team that already includes former Arsenal and Barcelona star Thierry Henry and experienced host Rebecca Lowe. His addition brings a unique blend of elite playing experience and charismatic television presence to the network's World Cup programming.
High-Profile Recruitment Efforts
According to reports from The Athletic, Fox Sports pursued several football luminaries for their analyst team. The network reportedly made serious attempts to recruit both global icon David Beckham and highly respected former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp. Sources indicate there were moments when Klopp appeared genuinely open to joining the broadcasting team, though ultimately neither signing materialised.
Instead, Fox secured Ibrahimovic as a full-time analyst for the tournament, which runs from June 11 to July 19. Network executives have remained notably tight-lipped about whether Tom Brady played any role in facilitating the deal. Brady, Fox's lead NFL analyst and an acquaintance of Ibrahimovic, could potentially have helped broker the agreement, though no confirmation has been provided.
Zlatan Was Top Priority Target
Fox Sports president Brad Zager revealed to The Athletic that Ibrahimovic was a primary target from the outset. "He was at the top of the list of people we wanted to take swings at for this World Cup," Zager stated. "We put a blank slate on the board, thinking some were longshots and guys who have worked with us in the past and a lot of stuff in between. And Zlatan was one that there was no reason to not take a swing and see if he would be willing to do this."
Months of Recruitment Efforts
The network's pursuit of Ibrahimovic reportedly began last autumn, demonstrating their sustained commitment to securing his services. The Swedish striker brings genuine World Cup pedigree to the role, having represented his national team at both the 2002 and 2006 tournaments.
American soccer fans are already familiar with Ibrahimovic from his two-season stint with LA Galaxy in Major League Soccer, where he scored 53 goals in 58 appearances between 2018 and 2019. His remarkable playing career spanned nearly a quarter of a century and included prestigious clubs across Europe.
An Illustrious Playing Career
During his extraordinary professional journey, Ibrahimovic played for some of football's most celebrated clubs including Juventus, Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain, and Manchester United. He remains Sweden's all-time record goalscorer with an impressive 62 goals in 122 international appearances for his country.
His transition to broadcasting represents a natural evolution for a player known for his articulate, confident, and often provocative public statements throughout his playing days. Fox Sports executives clearly believe his personality will translate effectively to television analysis during one of sport's biggest global events.
