Wrexham AFC striker Paul Mullin has seen his loan spell at Wigan Athletic abruptly terminated, marking a significant setback for the player who was instrumental in the club's remarkable rise.
Loan Move Ends Prematurely
The League One club activated a break clause in Mullin's loan contract, forcing his return to the Racecourse Ground this month. Wrexham confirmed the news in an official statement on Monday, stating the player would be back with immediate effect.
Mullin, 31, joined Wigan on loan last summer after finding his opportunities limited at Wrexham in the second half of the previous season. His departure followed reported disagreements with manager Phil Parkinson and the signings of forwards Sam Smith and Jay Rodriguez.
A Striker's Struggling Form
The decision by Wigan comes after a period of underwhelming performance from the forward. During his time with the Latics, Mullin managed just five goals in 26 appearances across all competitions.
This represents a stark contrast to his prolific form in previous campaigns for Wrexham. He was the talisman during the club's back-to-back promotions, scoring 38 goals in the 2022-23 National League season and 24 in League Two the following year. However, he netted only three times in League One last season before his loan move.
An Uncertain Future at the Racecourse
Wrexham's statement hinted that Mullin's return may not be permanent. The club said it would 'assess Mullin on his return and... explore all possible options for the striker's future'. His current contract with the Welsh side runs until the end of the 2025/26 season.
Following the confirmation of his initial loan move in the summer, Mullin posted a heartfelt message on social media. Sharing an image of a jersey commemorating his 100th goal for Wrexham, he wished everyone at the club well, urging them to 'keep the train rolling'.
Co-owner Ryan Reynolds also paid a glowing tribute at the time. Posting a compilation video on Instagram set to the fan chant 'Super Paul Mullin', Reynolds wrote: 'I can't imagine seeing Mulls on loan and in another kit. We wouldn't be where we are without his heart, skill and work ethic.'
With his loan spell now ended prematurely, the focus shifts to where the cult hero will play his football next, as Wrexham continue their own journey in League One.
