England have become the first men's team from Europe to qualify for a World Cup with a perfect record, winning all eight matches without conceding a goal. The achievement, which matches the criteria of at least five games, puts them alongside a select group of European sides who have managed a 100% qualification record, including West Germany (1982), the Netherlands (2010), Spain (2010), Germany (2018) and Norway (2026).
This is not the first time England have qualified without conceding – they also did so for Italia 90, but three of their six group games were goalless draws. In women's football, the Lionesses achieved the feat for the 2023 World Cup, scoring 80 goals in 10 games without reply. Germany women's 1995 campaign was particularly spectacular, winning six games with a goal difference of 55-0.
Other women's teams to qualify with a clean sheet and perfect record include Germany (1995, 2003, 2007), Denmark (1999), Sweden (1999, 2015), France (2011, 2015, 2023), England (2015, 2023), Spain (2019, 2023) and Denmark (2023). Oddly, three of the four men's teams who achieved this lost their opening match at the finals, though West Germany (1982), the Netherlands and Spain (both 2010) went on to reach the final.
In a separate tradition, football fans are known for long memories in their chants. Sheffield Wednesday and United supporters still sing about the 1979 'Boxing Day Massacre' – a 4-0 victory for Wednesday – to the tune of Boney M's Mary's Boy Child. Similarly, Hartlepool fans commemorate festive fisticuffs with Darlington from the early 1970s by promising to 'fight for evermore'.
