Thomas Frank insists he remains the right man to lead Tottenham Hotspur despite a 2-1 home defeat to Newcastle United that leaves the club 16th in the Premier League, just five points above the relegation zone. The loss was Spurs' 15th in 17 league games, prompting fans to chant for former manager Mauricio Pochettino and call for Frank to be sacked.
Frank, who spoke to the club's ownership on Monday, said he is 'convinced' he will still be in charge for the north London derby against Arsenal on Sunday week. 'I understand the question, but it's never only the head coach,' he argued. 'I'm 1,000% sure I am the right man for the job.'
The Dane pointed to an extensive injury list that left him without 10 players against Newcastle, with Wilson Odobert joining the casualty list after being substituted in the 34th minute. Captain Cristian Romero is also suspended. 'I never expected us to be in a situation like this with 10 or 11 injuries,' Frank said.
Despite the mounting pressure, Frank remains defiant, citing studies that suggest sacking the manager is often not the right solution. 'I know it's the only movement they [the board] have, but there are plenty of situations where it's not the right thing to do,' he added.
