Labour MP Chris Bryant has launched a scathing attack on the UK government over the "shocking" conditions in which asylum seekers are being housed. The former minister described the situation as "appalling" and demanded immediate action to address the deteriorating standards.
Bryant's Fiery Commons Speech
During a heated debate in the House of Commons, Bryant didn't mince words: "We should be ashamed of how we're treating these vulnerable people." The Rhondda MP highlighted cases where asylum seekers were left without basic necessities, including proper bedding and sanitation facilities.
Government Under Fire
The criticism comes amid growing concerns about the Home Office's handling of asylum accommodation. Bryant specifically targeted the use of former military barracks and budget hotels, which he argued were completely unsuitable for long-term stays.
"This isn't just about comfort," Bryant stressed. "We're talking about fundamental human dignity here. The current system is failing both asylum seekers and British taxpayers."
Call for Urgent Reforms
The Labour politician proposed several immediate measures:
- Independent inspections of all asylum accommodation
- Strict enforcement of minimum standards
- Faster processing of asylum claims to reduce overcrowding
- Proper medical support for residents
Bryant warned that continued neglect could lead to serious public health crises and further damage the UK's international reputation.
