Bow Echo, trained by George Boughey and ridden by 20-year-old Billy Loughnane, won the 2,000 Guineas at Newmarket on Saturday, securing a landmark first Classic victory for the young jockey. The 9-2 chance powered home by two and three-quarter lengths, with joint-favourites Gstaad and Distant Storm filling the places.
Boughey, 34, now joins an elite group of trainers who have won both the 1,000 and 2,000 Guineas, having taken the fillies' Classic in 2022. He confirmed that Bow Echo will likely target the St James's Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot next month, for which the colt is already the even-money favourite with Paddy Power.
Loughnane, who turned 20 in March, delivered a supremely confident ride, holding Bow Echo up before delivering a decisive run towards the stands' side. “I’ve wanted to be a jockey ever since I could talk,” he said. “He’s an absolute star, a dream to ride.”
Boughee praised the colt's temperament, saying: “This horse has the most extraordinary brain, he’s so unassuming and he makes my job easy.” The victory was also an emotional tribute to Bow Echo's late owner, Sheikh Mohammed Obaid al Maktoum, who died in December.
