Rio Ferdinand Delivers Blunt Assessment of Manchester United Defender
Manchester United icon Rio Ferdinand has issued a stark warning to young defender Leny Yoro, advising him to be more selective in his physical confrontations during matches. Ferdinand, speaking on his podcast Rio Ferdinand Presents, expressed concern that the 20-year-old French centre-back is engaging in too many tussles he cannot win against more physically developed opponents.
The Physical Disadvantage of Youth
Ferdinand highlighted Yoro's age as a significant factor, noting that while the defender shows promise, he is regularly facing strikers in their prime who possess superior strength and experience. "Leny Yoro right now is trying to fight too many fights in a game, when physically he's not starting at the same place," Ferdinand stated. "They're all much more physically developed. Most of the players he's playing against and No. 9s especially are stronger than him."
The former England international emphasised the need for strategic thinking, urging Yoro to pick his battles more carefully. "So, then you've got to pick your battles. Pick your duel. Which one are you actually going to have if you've got a 60-40 in your favour? Then you go all in."
Statistical Struggles and Managerial Changes
Yoro's challenges are reflected in Manchester United's defensive record this season. The young defender has been part of only three Premier League clean sheets, with the most recent occurring during a 1-0 victory over Everton where he played the full ninety minutes. This statistic underscores the broader defensive issues plaguing the team throughout the campaign.
The Frenchman, originally signed by Erik ten Hag from Lille, is already under his third manager at Old Trafford following the departure of Ruben Amorim and the appointment of Michael Carrick. Amorim previously noted Yoro's difficulty in recovering from in-game setbacks, commenting, "He makes a mistake in the game and then he struggles because he’s too young and he wants to do everything so well. He’s growing with games and with setbacks; it's not easy for him as a young guy."
Defensive Reorganisation and Competition
Carrick's arrival has brought tactical changes, shifting from Amorim's back three system to a more conventional back four. This adjustment has altered the defensive dynamics at the club. In United's recent loss to Newcastle, Yoro partnered with Harry Maguire, forming a pairing that has developed in recent weeks due to Lisandro Martinez's injury absence.
However, Martinez's impending return will create selection dilemmas for Carrick, compounded by the emergence of highly-rated youngster Ayden Heaven, who is also vying for first-team minutes to aid his development. This increased competition places additional pressure on Yoro to refine his game and address the flaws identified by Ferdinand.
As Yoro continues his development in one of football's most demanding leagues, Ferdinand's advice serves as a crucial reminder of the mental and strategic aspects required to succeed at the highest level, beyond mere physical talent.
