Former Arsenal transfer target Joan Garcia is braced for a venomous homecoming this weekend, with Espanyol fans threatening to pelt him with rats upon his return with arch-rivals Barcelona.
A Bitter City Switch Sparks Fury
The 24-year-old goalkeeper, who came through the youth ranks at Espanyol, prompted fury by completing a £21million move to Barcelona in the summer of 2025. His decision to cross the city divide made him the first player to do so in 31 years, signing a six-year deal with the Catalan giants after they triggered his release clause.
Garcia, who had been subject to bids from Arsenal prior to his switch, will now face his old club for the first time at the RCDE Stadium on Saturday. The reception is expected to be intensely hostile, with several Espanyol supporter groups reportedly discussing throwing rodents at their former star.
Extreme Security Measures Enacted
In response to the threats, extraordinary security preparations are in place. Safety nets have been installed behind both goals to prevent objects from reaching the pitch. Authorities have also implemented extra security checks and a lengthened list of prohibited items, which includes motorbike helmets, suitcases, and laptops.
In a move to limit tensions, away fans have been banned from the derby clash. Espanyol has stated that any supporters wearing Barcelona "shirts, scarves, hats, flags, or any other insignia" will be denied entry to the stadium.
Club Captain Pleads for Restraint
Espanyol captain Leandro Cabrera has publicly urged fans not to let their anger harm the club itself. In an interview with TV3, the defender acknowledged the right to protest but highlighted the financial benefit of Garcia's sale.
"Fans are entitled to boo or whistle whoever they want, but it has to be done from a perspective in which our own club can’t be harmed by that," Cabrera said. "With Joan’s departure, Espanyol got an amount of money that has been very useful to secure important signings... so whatever happens from now on it can’t have a bad impact on our club."
The club is wary of punishment, having received a suspended stadium closure in September 2024 after a referee was hit by a lighter during a match against Villarreal.
