Philadelphia Union's Ernst Tanner Suspended by MLS After Misconduct Investigation

Major League Soccer has suspended Philadelphia Union sporting director Ernst Tanner without pay until 1 June 2026, following an investigation into allegations of misconduct. The league announced the decision on Monday, stating that an independent review substantiated violations of MLS policies and standards of professional conduct.

The investigation, led by law firm Littler Mendelson, was reopened after a Guardian report in November detailed wide-ranging allegations against Tanner. This was the second MLS probe into the executive; an earlier complaint by the MLS Players Association alleging racist, sexist and homophobic behaviour was not substantiated. The Guardian's reporting corroborated several of those claims, prompting the league to order a new investigation with outside counsel.

Tanner has denied the allegations, saying in November he would cooperate fully to clear his name. In a statement on Monday, he expressed regret for the impact on the club and supporters, adding that he looks forward to returning to work. MLS said Tanner must complete a league-approved restorative practices programme before reinstatement, a condition similar to that imposed on former New England Revolution coach Bruce Arena in 2023.

The Philadelphia Union said in a statement that it supports the league's disciplinary action and will evaluate the best structure for the organisation following the process. The club reiterated its commitment to a safe and inclusive environment. The Guardian reported last month that the investigation faced hurdles due to non-disclosure agreements, but the Union and Littler Mendelson assured that witnesses could participate without fear of legal action.

Tanner had been on leave overseas during the investigation. On 17 February, Union owner Richie Graham posted a photo on Instagram showing Tanner with business associates, though the club said it had no knowledge of the personal trip. A source familiar with the outcome said the length of Tanner's suspension mirrors that of Arena's, and that his pay suspension began on Monday, though it is unclear if he received pay during the investigation itself.

On the field, the Union have started the 2026 season poorly, becoming the first team in MLS history to go winless in their first four matches after finishing with the league's best record last year.
