Chelsea's Pedro Neto is confronting the possibility of a significant ban after UEFA initiated disciplinary proceedings against him for an incident involving a ballboy during the Champions League clash with Paris Saint-Germain. The Portuguese winger pushed the young attendant in a moment of frustration, sparking an on-field argument and now potentially severe consequences from European football's governing body.
UEFA Investigation Launched
UEFA has confirmed that it is investigating Neto for "unsporting behaviour" following the first leg of the last-16 tie, which ended in a 5-2 defeat for Chelsea. The disciplinary bodies will review the case and decide on appropriate sanctions, which could include a suspension, fine, or official warning. With the second leg scheduled for Tuesday, there is a real chance Neto could be ruled out of the crucial return match at Stamford Bridge.
Neto's Apology and Shirt Gesture
After the match, Neto immediately addressed the controversy, apologising to the ballboy and offering his shirt as a gesture of remorse. In an interview with TNT Sport, he explained, "I want to apologise to the ballboy; I have already spoken to him. We were losing and in the emotion of the game I wanted to get the ball fast and I gave him a little push. I'm not like this. It was in the heat of the moment and I want to apologise. I gave him my shirt. I'm really sorry about it – I feel I have to apologise to him."
Chelsea's Disciplinary Struggles
This incident adds to a troubling pattern of indiscipline for Chelsea this season. The team has accumulated nine red cards, with Neto himself being sent off earlier this month in a defeat to Arsenal for two bookings. Head coach Liam Rosenior has repeatedly called for improved behaviour from his players. Regarding the ballboy altercation, Rosenior stated, "I saw there was an altercation with the ball boy. But if there was anything from our side that was wrong or out of order, I apologise on behalf of the club. But I think Pedro has done in interviews. I genuinely haven't seen it back."
Incident Details and Fallout
The push occurred when Neto attempted to quickly retrieve the ball after it went out for a throw-in, causing the ballboy to fall to the turf. This led to a brief confrontation between players before order was restored. Despite Neto's post-match apologies and the shirt exchange, UEFA's swift action indicates that such gestures may not be sufficient to avoid punishment. The case highlights ongoing concerns about player conduct in high-stakes matches and could set a precedent for how similar incidents are handled in future European competitions.
