Ronnie O'Sullivan is set to return to the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield for his debut at the World Seniors Championship, just days after Wu Yize claimed the World Snooker Championship title at the same venue. The tournament runs from May 6 to May 10, 2026.
O'Sullivan's Recent Defeat
The 50-year-old snooker legend, known as 'The Rocket,' saw his bid for a record eighth world title end in a narrow second-round defeat to John Higgins. Now, he aims to add a new trophy to his illustrious career by competing in the seniors event for the first time.
Rule Change Opens Door
A rule change last year allows any professional player aged 40 or over to participate in veteran tournaments, including the sport's current top stars. O'Sullivan joins notable players such as Ali Carter, Stuart Bingham, Matthew Stevens, and legends Jimmy White and Ken Doherty in the field.
Schedule and Prize Money
O'Sullivan is slated to play on Friday against the winner of a first-round match between Gerard Greene and Ken Doherty. The prize money, however, is a fraction of the £500,000 that new world champion Wu Yize earned. The seniors tournament's total prize fund has increased from £50,000 to £80,000, with the champion receiving £30,000.
Impact on the Event
World Seniors Snooker chairman Jason Francis highlighted the significance of O'Sullivan's participation. "Playing in the Seniors will never be a commercial decision for Ronnie," Francis told Mirror Sport. "We're not at that level yet, although I hope we will be one day. Ronnie being in the event elevates everything about it." He added that players are excited at the prospect of facing O'Sullivan live on Channel 5.
Francis noted that a thousand tickets were sold in the first three days after O'Sullivan's participation was announced, even before the draw was made. "That's the effect he still has," Francis said. He also emphasised that the increased profile benefits lower-ranked players and amateurs.
Defending Champion
Defending champion Alfie Burden enters as the top seed after defeating Aaron Canavan 8-4 in last year's final. O'Sullivan is ranked fourth behind Burden, Joe Perry, and Nigel Bond. The tournament will be broadcast live on Channel 5.
