Holidaymakers have been advised that booking a package holiday could offer greater consumer protection this summer, according to travel specialists. Amid concerns over potential flight disruptions linked to the Middle East conflict and jet fuel supplies, many travellers are seeking clarity on their rights if flights are cancelled.
Rob Brooks, a travel specialist and influencer with On the Beach, claims package holidays are safer. He argues that booking flights and hotels separately leaves travellers vulnerable, whereas package holidays provide protection, with the holiday company responsible for finding alternatives or refunding the entire trip.
Brooks echoed advice from Martin Lewis, founder of MoneySavingExpert, who previously highlighted that DIY bookings may not guarantee refunds for hotels if flights are cancelled. Lewis explained that under package holiday regulations, consumers generally get everything back, but with separate bookings, the hotel remains available and may not offer a refund.
On the Beach has committed to same-day processing of refunds for cancelled flights, offering either an alternative flight or a full refund. Caspar Nelson, holiday expert at On the Beach, emphasised that holidaymakers deserve certainty, and the company aims to provide quick resolution during disruptions.
While the UK government states there are no immediate jet fuel supply issues and preparations are in place, travellers are encouraged to consider package holidays for added security. Brooks noted that 99% of flights are still operating as planned, but for the 1% affected, the booking method can make a significant difference.
