Former Chelsea Star John Obi Mikel Launches Scathing Attack on Arsenal Boss Mikel Arteta

Former Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel has delivered a brutal assessment of Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta, suggesting the Gunners boss is struggling to cope with the intense pressure of the Premier League title race. In a candid podcast appearance, Mikel drew sharp comparisons with Manchester City's experienced manager Pep Guardiola, highlighting what he perceives as Arteta's mounting tension and loss of control.

Arteta 'Rattled' and Losing Dressing Room Control, Claims Mikel

John Obi Mikel did not hold back in his criticism, stating that Mikel Arteta appears "rattled" and has "lost control of the dressing room." The former Nigeria international pointed to Arsenal's inconsistent form in recent months as evidence of deeper issues within the club. Arsenal's struggles include a 2-0 defeat to Manchester City in the Carabao Cup final, an embarrassing FA Cup exit against Championship side Southampton, and a concerning 2-1 home loss to Bournemouth in the league.

Despite these setbacks, Arsenal have achieved a historic milestone by reaching the Champions League semi-finals for the second consecutive season—a feat never before accomplished in the club's history. However, Sunday's 2-1 defeat at Manchester City has jeopardised their position at the top of the Premier League table, with Guardiola's side poised to overtake them if they secure a win against Burnley.

Mikel Highlights Arteta's Unconventional Methods and Quotes

On the latest episode of the Obi One Podcast, Mikel scrutinised Arteta's public comments and unusual training ground antics as signs of mounting pressure. He referenced Arteta's quote, "I'm on fire. Bring it on," and noted the manager's frequent weekly statements. Mikel also mentioned unconventional methods such as players using pens in training and TikTok music playing, alongside quirky phrases like "bring the lunch, bring the dinner."

Mikel advised Arteta to "calm down, mate, enjoy it, relax," emphasising that the Arsenal boss has worked hard to reach this position but now appears overwhelmed. He contrasted Arteta's demeanor with that of Pep Guardiola, stating, "When you look at both managers right now, you can see who's been there, who's done it, the experience, the know-how, how to play down situations, how to control situations."

He added, "On one hand, you have a manager who's absolutely rattled. Who's lost his s***, who's lost the control of his dressing room. He looks tense. He looks, even when he tries to be calm, he's faking it, it's not natural."

Arsenal's Chance to Bounce Back and Arteta's Belief

Arsenal have an opportunity to regain momentum this Saturday as they host Newcastle United at 12:30pm BST. With Manchester City occupied in the FA Cup this weekend, the Gunners could potentially extend their lead to six points with victories over Newcastle and Fulham in the coming weeks, before City's next league fixture.

Despite the criticism, Mikel Arteta remains steadfast in his belief that his squad can secure Arsenal's first Premier League title in 22 years. Following the defeat to Manchester City, Arteta expressed confidence, saying, "The positive thing is we have seen the level, we can cope with that, and not just that but do even better. There are five games to go, but we're going to give a real go for it. We have full belief we can do it."

He acknowledged the missed opportunity but remained optimistic, adding, "Today we have shown the team that we are. It's still in our hands, and it's there for the taking. We were close, not close enough. But now we have to reset. We lost an opportunity today, a big one. But there is still another five to go. There are still a lot of positives today."

As the title race heats up, all eyes will be on Arteta's ability to navigate the pressure and prove his critics wrong in the final stretch of the season.
