Woman's Persistence Leads to Cancer Diagnosis After Months of Dismissal

Sumbul Ari, a 26-year-old event content creator, took her health into her own hands after doctors repeatedly dismissed her extreme symptoms as mere dry skin requiring moisturiser. For eleven agonising months, she endured relentless itching that felt like "things were crawling in her skin," leading to sleepless nights and desperation.

Months of Misdiagnosis and Suffering

Despite visiting multiple medical professionals, Sumbul was told her condition was likely caused by:

  • Dry skin requiring regular moisturising
  • Possible scabies infection
  • Eczema or other common skin conditions

"I experienced uncontrollable itching every day that worsened at night," Sumbul recalled. "It would keep me up for hours. I hadn't had a full night's sleep for seven months straight."

The young woman tried numerous remedies without relief:

  1. Various prescribed creams and medications
  2. Antihistamines for allergic reactions
  3. Changing all household products on medical advice

None provided any meaningful relief from what she described as "itching myself to death."

The Turning Point: Self-Research and Discovery

The breakthrough came when Sumbul discovered a lump on her neck while randomly touching the area. This prompted her to conduct online research where she matched her complete symptom profile:

  • Extreme, persistent itching
  • Chronic fatigue and exhaustion
  • Regular night sweats
  • Significant loss of appetite
  • Newly discovered neck lump

"When I did my Google search, the symptoms came up – itchy skin, fatigue, night sweats," Sumbul explained. "I knew instantly I had cancer."

Medical Confirmation and Diagnosis

Armed with her research, Sumbul visited a doctor on March 4 and passionately advocated for proper investigation. Through tears of frustration and fear, she detailed her eleven-month ordeal and begged for an ultrasound examination.

The medical journey that followed confirmed her suspicions:

  1. Ultrasound revealed multiple enlarged lymph nodes in her neck
  2. CT scan showed additional enlarged nodes across her chest and neck
  3. Biopsy and PET scan provided definitive confirmation

On March 17, haematologists officially diagnosed Sumbul with Hodgkin's Lymphoma at stage two to three, with cancer having spread to her spleen.

Treatment and Advocacy Message

Sumbul has now completed her first round of chemotherapy with five additional treatments remaining in her protocol. Despite the challenging diagnosis, she expressed relief at finally being heard and receiving appropriate care.

"I was so relieved because I'd finally felt that someone listened to me," she said. "I knew that I was finally on the right path of having an itch-free day and getting a good night's sleep."

The determined young woman now shares a crucial message with others facing similar medical challenges: "If you know there is something wrong with you, please do not stop advocating for yourself. Trust your instincts when your body tells you something isn't right."

Her story highlights the importance of patient persistence in healthcare and serves as a reminder that unusual symptoms, particularly when persistent and severe, warrant thorough investigation regardless of initial medical opinions.
