Former Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay has delivered a powerful and succinct verdict on his departure from Old Trafford, after being crowned Serie A Player of the Year for the 2024-25 season.
Napoli move vindicated by individual honour
The Scotland international, who left United for Napoli in the summer of 2024, received the prestigious award at the Gran Gala del Calcio in Milan on Monday night. His immediate impact in Italy has been profound, playing a key role in Napoli's Serie A title triumph last season.
When asked about his transfer, McTominay needed just 13 words to encapsulate his feelings. "Coming to Napoli was an easy choice, I came to the right place," the midfielder stated, as reported by The Sun.
Stellar stats spark United regret
McTominay's on-pitch contributions have been exceptional. In his debut campaign under manager Antonio Conte, he registered 13 goals and six assists across all competitions from the heart of midfield. This form earned him the Serie A MVP award for last season and a place in the league's official Team of the Season.
His success has led to growing discontent among sections of the Manchester United support. The club sanctioned his sale for a reported fee of just £25 million, a sum that now appears a significant bargain for the Italian champions.
Ten Hag's PSR explanation under scrutiny
At the time of the sale, then-United boss Erik ten Hag pointed to Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) as a driving factor. He explained that academy graduates like McTominay hold higher pure profit value in accounting terms, making their sales crucial for financial compliance.
"He was so important for our team," Ten Hag admitted. "But unfortunately, it’s the rules. You have to discuss the rules to do sales, and obviously homegrown players, academy players, bring more value."
However, the decision is increasingly questioned as McTominay, aged 28, continues to excel. He has also helped Scotland qualify for the 2026 World Cup, maintaining his fine form into the current season.
At the awards ceremony, McTominay expanded on his bond with his new club. "It’s sensational, it’s incredible to be here and win this award," he said. "Thank you to everyone, the team, the staff, and my teammates. My bond with Napoli is special, there are so many special places here."
The midfielder made 255 appearances for Manchester United, scoring 29 goals, before embarking on his Italian adventure. He is set to feature for Napoli next in their Coppa Italia clash against Cagliari on Wednesday night.
