In a landmark moment for modern naval warfare, Ukrainian forces are believed to have successfully destroyed a Russian submarine using unmanned underwater vehicles. This unprecedented attack, if confirmed, represents the first time in history a submarine has been taken out by a naval drone.
The Attack at Novorossiysk
Footage released by Ukraine's Security Service (SBU) purports to show the dramatic moment of the strike in the Black Sea port of Novorossiysk. The video shows a massive plume of water and debris erupting into the air above the Russian naval base, the result of what Ukraine claims was a direct hit by its 'Sea Baby' drones on a Kilo-class submarine.
The SBU stated the vessel, identified as a Class 636.3 'Varshavyanka' submarine, sustained critical damage and has been put out of action. This variant is the most modern diesel-electric attack submarine in Russia's fleet, capable of diving to depths of around 790 feet and armed with torpedoes, mines, and missiles.
Capabilities and Cost of the Target
The targeted submarine was a significant asset. According to Ukrainian intelligence, it was carrying four Kalibr cruise missiles at the time of the attack. The land-based versions of these missiles have a formidable range of up to 1,550 miles.
The financial blow to Russia is expected to be severe. While estimates vary, each Kilo-class submarine costs hundreds of millions of pounds to build. Ukraine suggests that due to international sanctions hampering Russia's military-industrial complex, replacing this vessel could cost the Kremlin as much as half a billion dollars.
The Rise of the Sea Baby Drone
The weapon behind this historic strike is the indigenously developed Sea Baby naval drone. Created by Ukraine following Russia's full-scale invasion, this unmanned vessel represents a new asymmetric threat. It is engineered to carry a devastating payload of nearly 1,900 pounds of explosives, which can be detonated remotely upon reaching its target.
This successful deployment underscores a strategic shift, where relatively low-cost, innovative drone technology can inflict massive damage on high-value, traditional naval assets. The attack at Novorossiysk not only damages Russian Black Sea Fleet capabilities but also sets a new precedent in maritime conflict.
