Man Utd to Loan Three Youngsters in January as Mainoo Stays
Man Utd to loan three youngsters in January window

Manchester United are preparing for a strategic reshuffle in the upcoming January transfer window, with plans to send three of their promising young talents out on loan. This move is a direct response to the club's limited fixture schedule this season, which has drastically reduced opportunities for squad rotation and player development.

Limited Game Time Forces United's Hand

The absence of European football and an early exit from the Carabao Cup has left manager Ruben Amorim with a threadbare match calendar. The team typically plays just once a week, allowing Amorim to maintain consistency in his starting eleven. While this approach yielded a five-match unbeaten Premier League run before the recent 1-0 defeat by Everton, it has created a significant bottleneck for emerging academy stars seeking first-team minutes.

This lack of opportunity is starkly illustrated by the situation of Kobbie Mainoo. The highly-regarded 20-year-old midfielder has managed a mere 260 minutes across nine appearances this season, with his only start coming in the embarrassing Carabao Cup loss to Grimsby.

The Three Youngsters Set for Loan Moves

According to reports, the club is now weighing up temporary moves for three specific youngsters to accelerate their development through regular playing time elsewhere.

Diego Leon, an 18-year-old left-back signed for a potential £7million from Cerro Porteno last summer, is yet to make his senior debut. With Luke Shaw and Patrick Dorgu ahead of him, Leon has been restricted to four appearances on the bench and under-21s football. Initially hesitant about a loan, his frustration is growing, and a move to French side Nice—also owned by Ineos—is being considered.

Sekou Kone, a 19-year-old midfielder who joined in the summer of 2024, has been featuring for the under-21s. His progress was briefly interrupted by a concussion sustained in a National League Cup tie at Tamworth last month, but he has since returned to action.

Finally, Ayden Heaven, a centre-back highly rated by Amorim himself, has seen his path to the first team blocked. He has managed just 92 minutes of action this term and faces increased competition with the imminent return of Lisandro Martinez from injury.

Mainoo and Zirkzee to Remain at Old Trafford

While exits are being arranged for the trio, the situation is different for Kobbie Mainoo and striker Joshua Zirkzee. Both players are understood to be unhappy with their lack of regular minutes, but Amorim has indicated they are unlikely to be granted moves in January.

The manager's stance is heavily influenced by the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations, which will see United lose Bryan Mbeumo, Amad Diallo, and Noussair Mazraoui. This will deplete the squad, making it essential to retain depth.

Amorim acknowledged the players' frustrations in a recent statement, saying, "I was a football player. I understand everything, and I want to help my players in every situation. I understand the frustration of some players... But the first thing is that the club comes first. If I can help the club and the players, I will be happy. If not, I have to think about the team."

This calculated approach to the January window shows United are attempting to balance immediate first-team needs with the long-term development of their most exciting prospects.
